"Parents are still the key to the success of students," asserted both Brandi Elliott and Kimball De LaMare, the featured guests on Parent Choices for Struggling Teens July 11. In a discussion with Lon Woodbury on LA Talk Radio, Connecting With the Future addressed some of the concerns with the education system today.
"Despite the development of a class of professional educators the last century taking on many of the functions parents used to perform," explained Brandi, "parents still have a major responsibility and ability to help their children succeed in school."
Several trends in our society, that both Brandi and Kimball identified, will impact how education will look in the future. Not only are parents being more assertive in choosing their child's education, but also massive changes in education now include more Charter Schools, Vouchers and the re-emergence of smaller schools. Kimball also discussed the advantages and dark side of online education, while Brandi discussed the the social media aspect.
"With the increase in psychological and developmental knowledge from brain research, and the ability to individualize instruction," explained Kimball with regard to Special Needs schools for students who are struggling both behaviorally and emotionally, "parents and teachers will have the ability to construct an educational experience unique to each child, better meeting his/her needs."
"All this developing knowledge will increase choices parents have," Brandi continued, "and can lead to their confusion unless methods and professionals are found to help parents sort out what is important and unimportant to their decisions regarding their children."
