Valley View School is a small, established therapeutic boarding school for boys, ages 10-15 and in grades 6 to 12. This well structured environment works with boys who have difficulty in traditional school settings based on their behavior which can range from hyperactive and disruptive to lethargic and bored. Boys who have a difficult time with their family relationships, challenge authority and/or may be characterized as oppositional. Valley View does not work with boys who have a primary history of substance abuse or those described as "tough and hardened".
Located on 215 acres of timberland and fields, Valley View School was founded in 1970 and is accredited by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Department of Early Education and Child Care. Valley View School is also SEVIS approved and a member of NATSAP. Founder and Director of VVS and Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology is Philip G. Spiva, PhD. Rick Bulger, MSW, who has been with Valley View School since 1992, is the Associate Director, Jim Haupt, MA, is the Coordinator for Therapeutic Services and Jason Stein is the Director of Education. The full time clinical team working with the boys have been with Valley View a number of years.
The academic curriculum offers both college prep courses and intensive remedial instruction. Valley View also has a competitive sports program, in which they compete against other schools. These teams include soccer, basketball, tennis, golf, cross country running and softball. Boys learn the tools of a good work ethic and the results of both positive and negative consequences, earning points and privileges which (equals spending money) for chores done around the campus from raking and snow shoveling to kitchen duties. Valley View prefers to use an adult driven milieu and staff members become the role models, mentors and limit setters.
Recreational activities are extensive: music lessons, cooking clubs, bonsai club, a strong drama program, a spring break travel program to such exotic places as Russia, Peru, South Africa and China; and regularly scheduled activities around campus that include camping, hiking, bike riding, swimming, skiing and fishing.
