After a year of dealing with the challenges from the fire of October 2013, and deciding that despite these difficulties we would not be defeated, we are thrilled to finally be finished the rebuilding process. The official opening of the new facility - which includes two dormitories, dining room, kitchen, theater, staff offices and multiple student lounges - was during the first week of November when we celebrated another Parents' Weekend. Families were thrilled with the way the new buildings looked, and were glad to see the boys again living in the main dormitory.
While we deliberately kept the original footprint and the look of Valley View the way it was, the entire place was rebuilt from the ground up. We now have larger and more comfortable lounges, bedrooms, offices and common areas, air conditioning throughout, and a state-of-the-art theater complex. While we are aware that the therapeutic work we do with youngsters could really be done anywhere, it is nice to have a comfortable place to do our work.
After the fire, all of our students remained with us, despite having to make logistical changes with the remaining campus. Our staff showed tremendous support and commitment to the students and the process, and we continue with very much the same community of people that have been with us for a long time.
In terms of program and how and what we are doing, we have also not changed, but rather fine-tuned a number of aspects that we feel relevant, including and increased level of individual therapy for all or our youngsters. We've also added a form of group work which we feel is important to have an impact upon the students. Additionally, we are exploring ways to increase the family work we are able to do. While none of these are new concepts, we believe it makes sense to continue to find ways to increase our effectiveness to remain one of the best places in America working with adolescent boys.
For those who know Valley View and those who may wish to learn more about what we're doing can contact us, and we'd welcome you to come see us. There is little that can be written that captures the true essence of who and what we are, and we look forward to sharing our commitment with friends and referral sources.
And, while we would hope and pray that no program would experience the emotional stress and challenges that we have had to face during this past year, we believe we are, unexplainably, a stronger and more resilient program because of it.
Valley View School is a therapeutic boarding school welcoming boys ages 10-15 upon admission.
