The TreeHouse Learning Community announces the opening of its residential, study-support program for college students ages 18-30 who are committed to recovery, self-discovery and higher education.
The TreeHouse Learning Community features fully-furnished apartment living with wireless internet, bed & bathroom linens, kitchen supplies, and utilities. In addition to housing, the TreeHouse offers programming to develop student skills to maximize academic performance, provide recovery support, and make available fun, sober recreation activities.
The TreeHouse Learning Community program was developed by a team of professionals from the fields of recovery, education and medicine who collaborated over a period of five years to create a program that uniquely addresses the needs of college students in recovery from drugs and alcohol.
"I love watching students go from uncertainty to finding purpose," said Dr. Molly McGinn, Founder and Managing Partner of the TreeHouse Learning Community. "The TreeHouse was built to link the extraordinary talents of students in recovery to a career path that excites them. When that happens, college curriculum becomes relevant and motivating."
The TreeHouse Learning Community tackles two of the most perplexing problems facing college students today:
- Approximately, 30% of students entering college drop out during the first year.
Department of Education, U.S. Dropout Statistics, 2000 through 2006
The TreeHouse Learning Community program reduces the conditions identified as the causes of high dropout rates among college freshman. Below is a partial listing of the causes of freshman dropout and the TreeHouse programming that addresses the cause:
- Isolation and a feeling of "not fitting in
The number of students at the TreeHouse Learning Community is limited to 16. The intimate environment and programming at TreeHouse fosters deep connections between students, TreeHouse staff and sober peers who are active in recovery.
- Academic Unpreparedness
Every student receives weekly one-on-one academic coaching by an education professional with a Master's Degree or Ph.D. as well as multiple facilitated study halls which are held every week in the TreeHouse's Learning Center.
- Lack of mentorship or personalized attention
TreeHouse Staff includes campus liaisons who walk students through the services provided by the local colleges and universities, educational professionals to address academic concerns, and housing staff who are available 24/7 that can assist students with any problem which might arise.

- One in three college students can be diagnosed with an alcohol use disorder
Harvard School of Public Health College, 2002 Study
College alcohol and drug abuse statistics demonstrate that students in recovery who attend college are exposed to environments which can put them at increased risk of relapse.
The primary purpose of the TreeHouse Learning Community is to provide a safe, drug-free environment for students in recovery to successfully meet the challenges of college life as they deepen their experience of recovery. The TreeHouse program utilizes the principles of the 12 steps program of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) for ongoing character development and to cultivate the skills of sober living.
The cost of the program is $2300 per month. Student enrollment at TreeHouse is not limited to the beginning of the college semesters. Students can enroll at any time as long as they are attending college or preparing to attend the next semester.
