Recent studies have shown that one of the most important building blocks to a successful recovery is when a family is involved in the process. Stan Selinger, PhD, has always championed this particular aspect of treatment at Timberline Knolls Residential Treatment Center, which is why Timberline Knolls is proud to announce Dr. Selinger as its new Family Therapy Coordinator. This represents a natural progression for Dr. Selinger after nearly five years of continuous contribution to the residents at Timberline Knolls and over 30 years of experience within the field.

Dr. Selinger has been a part of Timberline Knolls since its inception, specializing and developing the individual, adolescent and family therapy treatment programs. "Families are one of the most powerful resources available to individuals in their recovery," according to Dr. Selinger, "and at Timberline Knolls, family therapy emphasizes the whole system of interpersonal relationships in a resident's life."

Dr. Selinger believes that all family members influence those in need of healing. "Family members can learn better ways to interact with each other," said Dr. Selinger. In family therapy at Timberline Knolls, family roles, rules, boundaries and behavior patterns are explored and discussed. "This helps families identify their strengths and weaknesses, leading to a discovery of abilities to function in healthier ways," he said. "Not only does the resident go through a recovery process, but the family also will go through their own recovery." Following the Family Assessment, the entire family is brought together for Family Therapy sessions. In addition to the Family Therapy sessions, Dr. Selinger also co-developed and co-facilitates the Multi-Family Group program where families learn and discuss significant issues and are supported by hearing how other families go through the recovery processes. He also oversees the Family Dynamic Group where residents learn about issues related to families and how to better relate to their own.

Highly regarded by his colleagues, Dr. Selinger has presented at many professional conferences, been published in professional journals, and presented extensively. Having been in private practice for more 30 years, his areas of expertise include: eating disorders, substance abuse, self-harm, suicide behavior, trauma, precocious development, Biblical psychotherapy, the family communications, creative discipline, group dynamics, relaxation responses, and individuation and attachment issues.

Timberline Knolls is one of the leading private residential treatment centers for substance abuse, eating disorders, and severe depression, with or without a co-occurring disorder, dual diagnosis, or trauma. Expert treatment staff offers a nurturing environment of recovery for women and girls (ages 12 and older) on a 43-acre campus in suburban Chicago. Women and families seeking Christian addiction treatment have the option of working with a dedicated Christian therapist.
