Three Springs Paint Rock Valley held its 24th Annual Open House on June 13th, 2009. Program Administrator, Sharon Laney opened the ceremony by highlighting the history of the Paint Rock Valley community. "Located on the property of Paint Rock Valley, she explained, "are three natural springs that bubble up and come together creating a single spring." According to Ms. Laney, "this discovery led us to choose the name, Three Springs for our company." Paint Rock Valley has a 20 year history of providing outdoor therapeutic services for youth. As of June 13, 2009, Paint Rock Valley has served 2,158 residents and their families.
Guests at the Hawaiian themed open house enjoyed a colorful feast complete with afternoon snow cones. There were 125 guests in attendance, including family members of residents. An awards ceremony was held acknowledging both residents and staff.
On display especially for this event, were several Native American artifacts that were found on the property. University of Alabama archeologists have dated some of the artifacts to 400 AD and 1350 AD. After a heavy rain, Paint Rock staff can still find arrow heads and other early settlers artifacts. There are also several hand-hewn foundations of log cabins located on the property.
The area is rich with history. The Cherokee Indians lived in caves located on the Paint Rock Valley property. In 1814, historical records indicate that early settlers migrated in large numbers to the area. White trappers who visited this territory traded guns and knives with the Native Americans for animal skins and furs. In the 1860's the confederate army located a foundry in Paint Rock where they made cannon balls and shipped them to the battle front. General Sherman and his troops spent the winter in Jackson County as the battles and destruction made their way into Paint Rock.
According to local folklore, David Crockett, after hearing about the beauty and bounty of the Paint Rock Valley stood on a hill overlooking the valley and carved his name into a tree. At Three Springs Paint Rock Valley, we value the history of the valley. "It is important to preserve the history here, we appreciate the opportunity to provide active learning opportunities for youth and their families who spend time us in the valley. Our Open House provided a great way for us to bring history to life." said Laney.
