February 15, 2011

On a show titled "A Baby at Risk" that aired on February 2, 2011, Dr. Phil offered to send a pregnant woman addicted to opiates to The Rose, a women-only addiction treatment center in Newport Beach, California.

The young woman, who is in her second trimester of pregnancy, had been abusing Suboxone for five years. Once caught in the vicious cycle of addiction, she found herself abusing drugs despite the risks to her baby. Because she could no longer get prescriptions for Suboxone from a doctor, she began using her younger brother (newly sober and just out of rehab himself) to get drugs for her off the street.

During a surprise intervention on the Dr. Phil Show, Dr. Jennifer Farrell, an esteemed addiction psychiatrist and OB/GYN Dr. Tricia Wright counseled the young woman on how to end the suffering for herself and her baby. Dr. Phil introduced Paige Willard, the Clinical Outreach Coordinator at The Rose, who offered to take the woman to treatment that day on a full scholarship.

The Rose was an ideal match for the young woman's needs because it is an intimate, personalized drug rehab center that exclusively treats women. In addition to a full range of traditional and cutting-edge therapies to treat addiction, The Rose addresses any underlying issues that stand in the way of lifelong sobriety, such as trauma, grief, anxiety, and depression.

The addiction specialists at The Rose understand the unique needs of women addicted to drugs or alcohol, as well as the research-backed protocols for caring for pregnant women and their unborn children. The young woman would have access to all of the tools she would need to achieve lifelong sobriety, including:

  • Individual and group therapy with master's level clinicians

  • Referrals to a vast network of addiction treatment professionals and medical care providers

  • Daily living in a vibrant recovery community right on the beach

  • Holistic therapies, including yoga, tai chi, Pilates and body sculpting

  • Gender-specific 12-Step meetings

  • Monthly family program

  • Education and workshops about addiction, trauma and other issues

  • A comprehensive extended care program

  • Transitional work and sober college programs

"We give you the tools to go home with your husband and lead a sober life," Willard explained on the Dr. Phil Show.

After the intervention, the young woman agreed to enter The Rose drug rehab for women in order to protect her baby from the distress of opiate detox and to get her life back on track. Thanks to treatment and her motivation to get well, she is doing well and is looking forward to the birth of her baby.

"It has truly been a privilege to help," said Willard. "The Dr. Phil Show is all about helping people - both in front of the cameras and behind the scenes - and we are honored to be a partner in that mission."
