The Texas Hill Country School “specializes in working with middle and high school students with mood disorders, psychotic disorders, acquired brain injury, and a host of other developmental, neurological and psychological difficulties.” They enroll both residential and day students who have had difficulties in traditional classroom settings. Approved by the Texas Education Agency as a non-public school, the school’s certified teachers have specialized training in acquired brain injury and work with school districts to develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP) to ensure the students objectives are met. Goal oriented individualized instruction is offered that addresses developmental skills and educational deficiencies along with pre-vocational training.
Mentors guide the students and the faculty emphasizes healthy self-images, social awareness and the meaning of making contributions to one’s peers. The Texas Hill Country School teaches its students to succeed through the setting of personal goals, the discovery of personal resources, and the development of the critical thinking skills necessary to make positive choices. Dedicated to the development and education of the whole child, they empower their students to acquire the greatest degree of self-sufficiency possible.
They also offer educational, brain injury seminars throughout the year in the United States and in Canada. One such seminar, Scholarly Pursuits, is specifically designed for educators and families to address the impact brain injury has on students, while also providing intervention strategies to meet the special needs of the student with a brain-injury or other neurological disability in order to better insure that their return to school is a success. Their brain injury seminars are listed on their web site. They also publish the periodical, Premier Outlook, on a quarterly basis, which deals with the topic of brain injury.
