Originally founded in July 2008 as Oceanside Teen Center and later changed to Sunset Bay Academy in April 2009, this international, co-ed, therapeutic boarding school is for struggling teens ages 12-17 who are struggling with both negative behaviors and academic failures. Located in Baja California, Mexico, Sunset Bay operates with numerous certifications including: city permits, State Health Department Certification, Mexican Secretary of State SBA Regulated Hospital Certification, and Health Department Certification from the State of Baja, Mexico, State Psychiatric Health Department and a fire department certification.

Sunset Bay has a full non-surgical medical clinic on site offering services that include: dental/orthodontist, optometrist services in addition to an onsite medical doctor and resident psychologists. Dr. Raul Romero, PhD is the clinical director who worked as a mental health clinician at North Central Mental Health Clinic in San Diego, CA prior to joining Sunset Bay. The medical director is Dr. Habib Kuri, who prior to Sunset Bay, was a general surgeon at the Mexican Institute of Health in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Academic Director is Lic. Nadia Karina Corral Espinoza, certified by the Mexican Department of Education and Culture.

Students use a computer based curriculum overseen by certified teachers. Core classes include: English, science, math, social studies, foreign language, health and PE. Electives are also available. Sunset Bay works in partnership with Forest Trails Academy which is accredited by the National Association of Private and Home Schools, the National Association for the Legal Support of Alternative Schools and is a member of the Better Business Bureau.

Based on a 3 phase program, students earn privileges and outings that include trips to the beach, boat tours, and going to the movies or out to eat, shopping trips, horseback riding, 4-wheeling and trips to La Bufadora.
