Sunrise School is an agency of The Help Group and offers special education day school programs for student's ages 5-22 with moderate global delays associated with autism, mental retardation, Fragile X Syndrome and other developmental disabilities.
Barbara Firestone, PhD, is the President and CEO, Pamela Clark, MA, is the Director, Mary Bauman, PhD,is the Director of Clinical Services and Sue Anne Brocca, BA, is the Principal. Sunrise School was founded in 1975 and is certified by the California State Department of Education.
The individualized curriculum addresses the specific needs of students. One of the core components is the independent and semi-independent living skills training where students develop daily life skills and job readiness skills through pre-vocational and vocational training, both on and off campus. Students start their training in the early grades and as young adults may become independent workers in real jobs, including the student operated Sunrise Store, office work, postal service and custodial jobs at the school.
All the students participate in Community Based Instruction, learning real life skills such as riding a bus, buying food at a restaurant, learning to shop in stores and how to handle, to ultimately gain their independence.
Specialized classes in the "autistic spectrum" are designed for non-verbal or limited language students through a variety of methods including Applied Behavior Analysis, Sensory Integration, Discrete Trial Teaching, PECS (picture exchange communication system) and Occupational therapy, Speech and Language therapy and Adaptive Physical Education.
Sunrise School offers its students art and music programs, computer facilities and mental health and counseling services.
