Plans Campus Expansion

Sunrise RTC announced today its plans to build a 24-bed facility to expand its ability to serve adolescent girls with emotional and behavioral problems. The new campus will be built on three acres in Washington, Utah, fifteen miles from the original 36-bed facility in Hurricane, Utah.

"For several years, we have managed a waiting list and resisted strong demand for more beds," said Sunrise executive director, David Prior, LMFT. "We are committed to keeping the Sunrise experience intimate, safe, and clinically intensive. Building a new campus is the right solution because it allows us to preserve those program features while serving more families."

Both Sunrise sites will make use of the same off-campus day-school facility currently used by students from the Hurricane campus. This off-campus school experience is part of a strategy to help girls maintain a sense of normalcy and community involvement during the treatment process.

"Our in-town school facility gives students the important experience of literally 'going to school,'" said Sunrise education director, Kathrine Whittekiend, M.Ed.

"Leaving campus to go to school is just one of many ways we normalize the treatment experience," added residential director Corey Hickman, MS, CTRS. "These strategies keep students involved in familiar, community-based routines, which helps with transition after treatment--especially for girls who have struggled with anxiety."

Combining clinically sophisticated treatment with a high degree of community involvement helps Sunrise students generalize their treatment to other settings, which is the key to Sunrise's high post-treatment success rate, said Hickman.

By combining the best features of a boarding school, a treatment facility, and a transition program, we are able to wrap around these girls with care, giving them the support and tools necessary to thrive. Our licensed therapists and special-education trained teachers are equipped to help girls struggling with a number of issues.

Sunrise works with girls between the ages of 13 and 17 who are struggling with a range of emotional and behavioral issues. Sunrise is part of the InnerChange family of therapeutic programs for teens and young adults.
