Dr. Barbara Cunningham, EdD, from Summit Preparatory School in Kalispell, Montana, will give a presentation on: "Intellectually Gifted Underachievers: the oxymoron unraveled" at the June 11, 2009 Regional NATSAP Conference in Utah.

Intellectual giftedness is an enigma. It is a concept that, in the research, is articulated by several definitions and yet there is no consensus. When one adds to this already obscure concept the suggestion of underachievement, there is an even greater mystery. The idea of an underachieving intellectually gifted teen typically produces a profound reaction from the people directly involved.

What is it that appears to cause a brilliant young person to totally disengage with the academic process? How can someone that bright ever end up in a therapeutic boarding school? These questions and more will be addressed during the session.
