This spring the computer/technology access at Summit Prepatory School in Kalispell, Montana took on a whole new look. Each student was issued their own personal laptop.
At first glance, especially in a therapeutic setting, this may sound like a high risk scenario, but the computer software called NetSupport, is purposefully designed to offer schools a safe platform for expanded computer and internet use. The computers are housed in a secure cabinet and students have access only during class time with teacher supervision and also during study halls. The teachers use a facilitator's monitor which gives a small visual of each of the computers so that the teacher is able to view the specific screen that the student is working on. The system is filtered so that certain sites are blocked, such as social media and inappropriate sites. In addition to access for classroom assignments, students now have additional time to work on their college applications and essays.
Students will also have the opportunity to take their computer with them once they graduate.
If you would like to learn more about the software, here is a short video that describes NetSupport in schools.
