It is with pleasure that I introduce to you our new Executive Director of Stone Mountain School, Susan Hardy. As you may know, she was formerly the Executive Director of Adirondack Leadership Expeditions, a therapeutic wilderness program in upstate New York. In total, she has been working in the therapeutic education industry for over 17 years, and is eager to continue helping families in her move to Stone Mountain School.
If you are unfamiliar with Stone Mountain School, it is a licensed residential boarding school located on a 100-acre mountain setting campus in western North Carolina. The program offers numerous outdoor activities with both recreational and therapeutic benefits for boys ages 11-16 struggling with emotional issues or behavioral problems. Its beautiful yet rustic surrounding serves as an experiential classroom where the natural and logical consequences of daily living are clear and understood. The staff teaches basic living skills while implementing the Level System of Personal Development that is at the core of assisting young men toward responsible, self-managing behavior.
Stone Mountain School offers a premier, individualized education that meets state standards for grades 6 through 12. The school specializes in teaching students with learning disabilities, ADD and ADHD. Each student has an Individualized Education Plan regardless if they are certified in any special education category. Class sizes are generally seven students to each licensed teacher, with some subject areas utilizing an assistant as well. Students that need more individualized services are offered classes with our master-level special education teacher or with our language specialist who is experienced in Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory instruction.
We look forward to Susan leading Stone Mountain School into the future, helping young men successfully transition into adulthood with academic and personal accomplishment. Her experience has given her a deep understanding of the important role that families and professionals like you play throughout the entire SMS experience, and I hope that you have the opportunity to work with Susan in the future and experience the knowledgeable and fresh expertise she brings to Stone Mountain School.
