It is with great pleasure that Dr. Karen Fitzhugh announces the creation of The Sovereign School. Sovereign's formation is a product of Karen's former profession in the arts and her desire to connect students with their potential. Karen has spent the last four years as a Vice President for Aspen Education Group, and was previously Head of School at the King George School. Karen will serve as Sovereign's Executive Director and welcomes Shay Butts as the Director of Marketing and Admissions. Shay most recently served as the Director of Admissions for Fulshear Ranch Academy. Working together is not a new concept for these two women…their professional lives crossed many years ago when Karen was the Executive Director for Girls' Haven, and Shay was the Director of Development. Ten years later, this culmination of friendship and professional experience intersect to form the founding leadership of The Sovereign School.

Located in the scenic village of Peacham, Vermont, the Sovereign School is a clinically-sophisticated, transitional residential program for young women ages 18-24 experiencing complex emotional issues, relationship difficulties, and school failure. Using the visual, performing and culinary arts as a basis for developing self- reliance, the students experience an empowering environment where their strengths, talents and passions can be developed and enjoyed.

The Sovereign School incorporates Five Keys for Success designed to establish a student's independence: Emotional and Spiritual Wellness, Education and Career Training, Community Service and Apprenticeships, Creative Arts and Art Therapy, and Physical Health and Wellness. Progression through the program provides for the transition of responsibility from parent and program to the student over the course of one year.

Sovereign will be accepting student applications in May for Summer admissions. To learn more about our student profile, please contact Shay Butts by phone at 281-961-6890 or by email at sbutts@sovereign-school.com.

In the weeks ahead, we will be providing program and website information as well as new leadership team and staff announcements.
