Each Fall commemorates another season for Soltreks to celebrate its cycle around the sun. This Fall begins Soltreks 17th year of guiding individuals toward self-discovery using nature and the wilderness to navigate a path toward wellness.
The seed for Soltreks was planted when Doug Sabo instructed and facilitated a wilderness experience with a young man in the mountains of Montana [enrolled in another wilderness program], was struggling to make progress within his peer group setting. They spent ten days together on a One-on-One which enhanced his student's vulnerability and awareness of his choices and the impact of them on the lives of those who love him the most. That was over twenty-three years ago. In early summer he contacted Soltreks to share how meaningful his One-on-One trek was and how it became a pivotal moment in his life. Today he is happily married with children. Since then, the One-on-One treks have been the heart and soul of the Soltreks program, thus its name: SOLTREKS…the ONE trek.
Soltreks One-on-One clients are prompted by one of three different circumstances:
- Young adults needing an experience that marks their passage from adolescence into adulthood. The trek is an excellent adjunct to a Gap year. Appealing to young adults, these treks are shorter in length with less of a clinical focus and more of a personal growth and rite of passage journey.
- Older adults marking a transition in their life such as empty nesters, employment or relationship changes. This is also ideal for men whose son or daughter is currently in a therapeutic program. With the customization provided by a One-on-One, a trek is scheduled at the father's convenience, as a way to support his own personal growth by enriching relationship skills and mindfulness practices.
- A young adult currently enrolled in a young adult program may need a jump-start to refocus their energy and commitment to personal growth.
One-on-One treks are customized and vary in length from 8 to 30 days based upon need. By allowing the pace of the One-on-One trek to reflect the participants needs, distractions are at a minimum so the primary focus becomes self-awareness, and as Eckhart Tolle (2004) writes, living in the NOW. This powerful wilderness experience allows for a higher level of participant attention and individual reflection, creating the opportunity for greater insight and awareness.
One on One treks are offered year round in Northern Minnesota's Superior Hiking Trail and Boundary Waters Canoe Area, New Mexico's Gila National Forest, Florida's Everglades and Ten Thousand Islands and Alabama's Talladega National Forest and Pinhoti Trail. Co-owner Doug Sabo and qualified wilderness instructors facilitate individual treks. Doug specializes in facilitating treks for men and using photography as a tool to seek insight through nature's lens.
