Woodland Hills, CA, - The fall of 2008 brought continued success and growth to the Sober College athletic department. "The lacrosse program is, perhaps, our most notable achievement" said Athletic Director Dr Ken Niemann. "We tied UCLA 6-6 in box lacrosse competition at the Toyota Center. For a program this young, it's remarkable!" In addition to this league, Sober College athletes play club lacrosse on the weekend offering the opportunity for new players to try out the fastest game on two feet.

Sober College athletes also participated in their 19th and 20th triathlons picking up medals in the mountain bike category for each race. "It's incredibly moving" Niemann said. "The residents come to us physically ravaged by addiction. To watch them, weeks later, cross a finish line of a triathlon, 5K, or 10K race is deeply affecting." Training for these races often takes place in the scenic, rugged Santa Monica Mountains overlooking majestic Malibu Beach. Also available is the junior Olympic sized pool and state of the art cardio equipment at Spectrum Health Club.

The soccer program further brought a fifty percent college wide participation- one out of every two residents at Sober College was on a soccer team roster. Residents respectably played in 22 games from August through mid November with an ample number of wins. "There is something magical that happens when our students hit the field as a team. Not only does their self-esteem and confidence blow through the roof, it strengthens camaraderie within the whole community," concluded Dr. Niemann.

Other opportunities at Sober College include weekly indoor rock climbing, ice hockey, basketball, racquetball, surfing, skateboarding, deep-sea fishing, trapeze, cliff jumping, yoga and martial arts.
