Sober College announced a new therapeutic addition to their curriculum this month with Trapeze Therapy. The Richie Gaona Trapeze School, located just two miles from campus, allows individuals to walk a high wire, jump on a large trampoline and learn circus acrobatic skills. Many of Hollywood's stuntmen additionally train at Richie Gaona's school in preparation for an upcoming movie role.
"This type of experiential event allows Sober College students to experience the joys of sobriety in real life situations," began Loree Cohen, LCSW, Executive Director. "Through this kind of therapy, students are allowed to feel what it is like to let go and trust a power greater than themselves. Not only does it provide the opportunity for them to feel like they have overcome something, it is a challenge that allows the students to process the feeling of accomplishment."
Before beginning their own personal flight, the students were strapped in safety harnesses and briefed on the rules and regulations of the school. They continued with a quick ground lesson on a mini trapeze bar so that they could learn safe and correct posture for the activity. "I am a bit nervous but as long as I don't look down I think I will be OK. Besides, there is a net there to catch me if I fall." stated Jimmy S.
"By not resorting back to old patterns and moving through their fears the students get to incorporate new life skills to prepare them for uncomfortable situations they will face in life. Once they can move through this challenge it is an opportunity for them to increase both self esteem and confidence. Over the past summer we have included both surf and wind-tunnel activities in our students schedules and are thrilled with the new addition of trapeze," states Rick Macrory, CADC, Primary Counselor, "our students just love it!"
