The annual Out of the Darkness walk, for suicide prevention and awareness, took place in Santa Monica bringing in 600 participants and nearly $60,000 in donations. Among them were a group from Sober College, made up of 17 residents, 4 alumni, and 3 staff members. Sober College volunteered at the event last year for the first time and returned this year in even greater numbers. The volunteers were stationed along the walk to help direct traffic and guide the walkers along the 3 mile path through Santa Monica.
"I love participating in fun events like this," began Sarah, former resident and newly turned staff member. "I enjoy giving back to the community and supporting a cause that affects a lot of us in recovery. I feel a sense of belonging and purpose when I participate in these special activities."
After their participation in the walk last year, Sober College was enthusiastically invited back to volunteer the event again. A collaborative effort from staff and residents made it a huge success and a powerful experience for all. Not only did Sober College residents volunteer for the event, but the Sober College community donated approximately $2,000 towards the walk.
"My favorite part about my job is that I get to spend quality time with our students at fun events like this one. A sense of camaraderie and positivity affects everyone on campus, regardless if they are able to make an event or not. It is a contagious buzz that makes us feel like a big, happy family. It is really amazing," commented Kristine Spencer, Admissions Director.
