TOM BRATTER PRODUCES PAPER ON ADD/ADHD
(June 1, 2000) Available from The John Dewey Academy, Great Barrington, Massachusetts, 413- 528-9800, school president, Tom Bratter, has produced a 22 page article summarizing the research and his experience with ADD/ADHD, especially work critical of the usual way in which this disorder is presented. FLORIDA EDUCATION CONTRACT FOR AYS
(August 7, 2000) Elliot A. Sainer, CEO for Aspen Youth Services AYS, 562-467-5507, announced AYS was “awarded a contract by the School district of Palm Beach County, Florida to develop an Intensive Alternative Education school for 50 high risk students between the ages of 14 and 18.”

NEW ADMISSIONS AT PROVO CANYON
(August 8, 2000) Denise Westman, marketing for Provo Canyon School (PCS), Provo, Utah, 619-588-7499, announced the promotion of Steve Nielsen to become Director of Admissions. Nielsen has been an admissions counselor at PCS for more than 12 years, and worked directly with students for 6 years prior to that.

8 STUDENTS AT ACADEMY AT CEDAR MTN.
(August 10, 2000) Jodi Tuttle, founder and head of the Academy at Cedar Mountain, Cedar City, Utah, 877-723-3729, announced they are starting the Fall semester with 8 students, three girls, and five boys. Appointments have been set for enrolling additional students, and the initial reports are being finished as part of the accreditation process by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. The Academy is a new transition school designed to provide quality academics for students finishing more intense Emotional Growth Schools, or those floundering in traditional academics who need a different approach with a strong staff who understand the accompanying emotional factors.

EXCLUSIVELY FOR GIRLS ADDED BY ALLDREDGE ACADEMY
(August 11, 2000) Glenn Bender, Admissions for Alldredge Academy, in Davis, West Virginia, 888-468-1828 & 877-253-7334, announced the opening of their “second Village site, specifically and exclusively for girls.” The original site will continue to be used by boys. The new girl’s site will be predominantly staffed by women, with programming in place to address a range of gender specific issues. They also now offer a Two-Month Wilderness program, as well as their three-month Semester Back program.

HUNTER SCHOOL LEASING ANOTHER DORM
(August 11, 2000) Jeffrey Pettee, Headmaster at The Hunter School, Rumney, New Hampshire, 603-786-9427, a school for ADD/ADHD children emphasizing innovative educational approaches rather than treating ADD/ADHD as a disorder, announced that the school’s steady growth requires the lease of an additional dormitory. They are also welcoming a student this year from Thailand.

CEDU ANNOUNCES TWO COMMUNITY FORUMS TO ADDRESS ROAD ISSUE
(August 15, 2000) CEDU Family of Services (Sandpoint, Idaho 800-858-1933, cedu.com) is hosting two community forums to listen and record community concerns regarding the traffic and condition of the Ruby Creek Road. The first meeting was scheduled August 24; the second meeting will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, Sep. 11, at the same venue, the Naples Youth Hostel. On Oct 2, CEDU is scheduled to appear before the Boundary County Commissioners to present plans and options. Prior to the meeting, CEDU’s Northwest Academy and Ascent staff will begin placing tan tags in their windshields displaying the CEDU log, in order to identify CEDU employees in an effort to make their driving patterns more visible to the neighbors. NEW THERAPIST AT SECOND NATURE
(August 15, 2000) Scott Canter, Admissions for Second Nature, a clinical intervention wilderness program, Duchesne, Utah, 818-906-7611, announced the addition of Andrew J. Erkis, Ph.D. candidate as a therapist for the program. Andrew has been working with Second Nature as a co-therapist for some time.

IT’S A GIRL!!!
(August 18, 2000) Those who have had occasion to call Woodbury Reports in the last few months were likely to have their call answered by Charlene Lyle, Woodbury Reports Secretary, who gave birth to a baby girl at 12:14 AM on Friday, August 18th. Charlene’s third child, daughter Briana, weighed 6 pounds, 6 ounces.

GAGE HIT WITH 54 NEW CHARGES
(August 22, 2000) The Nugget Newspaper, in Sisters, Oregon, reported “A Deschutes County Grand Jury has slapped Steven Michael Gage with 54 new charges related to the operation of Royal Haven Equestrian Center for Girls. These are in addition to the 67 charges filed as of June 16,” which brings the total of charges up to 121, mostly sexual allegations, but also includes charges for withholding medical care and money laundering.

ELLIOTT BECOMES ST. PAUL’S ACADEMY NEW HEADMASTER
(August 22, 2000) Dave Johnson, the new Admissions Director at St. Paul’s Academy, Phoenix, AZ, 602-956-9090, an all boys school, announced several administrative changes at the school for the upcoming school year. Lowell Andrews, founder of the school, has stepped down as Headmaster after 40 years, remaining with the school as CEO and consultant. He will be replaced by Hal Elliott, who has been Assistant Headmaster for the past 14 years. The new Assistant Head, Marti Weiskopf, was Director of Admissions for the past 8 years. Jim Graves, Dean of Counseling for 16 years, has been promoted to Dean of Students.

ARBINGER INSTITUTE TRAIN-THE-TRAINER
(August 23, 2000) Jim Ferrell announced the Arbinger Institute, Salt Lake City, Utah, 800-307-9415, which for several years has provided training for the Anasazi Foundation, “is now making its programs available to other organizations in the treatment and care industries. For the first time, Arbinger is now offering a train-the-trainer program that will prepare representatives from treatment and other care programs to train their people in Arbinger’s approach.” The training session will be in Salt Lake City from September 25th through September 29th.

STONE MOUNTAIN SCHOOL DEVELOPMENTS
(August 23, 2000) Linda Tatsapaugh, Assistant Director of Stone Mountain School, Black Mountain, North Carolina, 828-669-8639, announced a number of changes they have had the opportunity to introduce since becoming a part of the Aspen Youth Services programs. For example, their first Alumni Trek, is scheduled to take place in Washington State. They are also welcoming new program leadership, including Program Director, Jeff Titley, previously with Eckerd Youth Alternatives and St. Croix Girls Camp, and Senior Counselor, Kelly Holdbrooks, transfering from Talisman, their summer camp. The expanded extracurricular program starting this Fall will include fencing, taught by director Cat Jennings, chess, taught by a nearby life master, drama, music and tree-climbing classes.

GUIDING HANDS
(August 24, 2000) Joey Dusina, 800-591-4263, announced that he is back at the helm of Guiding Hands, actively managing the transport service again. He has made some staff changes, including releasing some staff he felt did not meet his standards, and adding new staff to help serve the increased business.

CEDU HS MIDDLE SCHOOL AWARDED SIX YEAR ACCREDITATION
(August 28, 20,000) The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) recently granted a six-year accreditation to CEDU High School and CEDU Middle School (Running Springs, California 800-884-2338), the longest accreditation awarded by the association. The award letter noted “many laudable aspects of the school.” CEDU Family of Services is a member of The Brown Schools Education Services Group, which annually serves over 10,000 youth in a system of education and therapeutic programs in nine states and Puerto Rico.

CEDU ANNOUNCES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF ACADEMICS
(August 28, 2000) CEDU Family of Services (Sandpoint, Idaho, 800-858-1933) announced Will Laughlin, currently the academic director of the southwest region, will fill the new position of Executive Director of Academics, a new position established to unify the academic programming and educational resources currently available at the five emotional growth boarding schools they operate.

ON TRACK LICENSE EXPANDED TO COVER 13-YEAR OLDS
(August 28, 2000) The On Track (Mason, Texas 888-791-2577) therapeutic adventure program was recently granted an amendment by The Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services that now allows them to work with adolescents as young as 13-years old. The On Track program enrolls 13-17 year old adolescents seven days a week, operating within the 6000-acre Mason Mountain Wildlife Management Area, formerly an exotic preserve now operated by the State of Texas. A staff psychologist works in the field with students on an individual and group basis during this 28-day course.

RED FLAGGED PROGRAMS
(August 30, 2000) A web site titled I've Been There contains a list of private schools and programs that “have negative or abusive reports about them on the net.” This site has been referenced several times on Woodbury Reports web site’s Discussion Board.

SHAMROCK EDUCATIONAL ALTERNATIVES WELCOMES BABY GIRL
(Aug 31, 2000) Tom and Cathy Carter of Shamrock Educational Alternatives, Inc. (Newman Lake, Washington, 509-226-3662) are enjoying their new baby daughter, Maria Rose, who joined their team three weeks ago.
