UPDATE FROM ECHO SPRINGS
(September, 2002) Rhea Verbanic, Director of Admissions for Echo Springs Transitional Study Center, Bonners Ferry, Idaho, 208-267-1111, wrote to us with an update on student activities. Five students experienced the Brooks Range of Alaska, and received 3 college credits for the two weeks spent there. The GPA for their students who attended North Idaho College, Coeur D’Alene, Idaho, last semester was 3.01. Their students have also acquired part-time jobs, provided numerous volunteer service hours and maintained sobriety through appropriate community support systems.
CHARGES FILED AGAINST FORMER CONTRACTED PHYSICIAN

Anasazi Foundation, Mesa, Arizona, 800-657-3445, reported they contacted the Gilbert Police Department and Child Protective Services after receiving a call from a mother stating her son may have been abused by Dr. Grigory Sorikin, the physician who conducted his physical examination on the day of admission to Anasazi. Dr. Grigory Sorokin was arrested on September 3, 2002. He was not an employee of Anasazi Foundation, nor did he see program participants after admission. “Anasazi is cooperating with authorities in every way” and have requested anyone who may have information that would be helpful to the investigation, to contact the Gilbert Police Department at 480-503-6578.

FEDERAL INVESTIGATION INTO PACIFIC COAST ACADEMY AND STEVE CARTISANO
(October 29, 2002) The Salt Lake Tribute reported the U.S. Department of Justice has initiated a grand jury investigation into Pacific Coast Academy, in Samoa. Raided by officials from the U.S. Consulate in Samoa in July 2001, they are also investigating Steve Cartisano, who has been involved with several failed schools including: Pacific Coast Academy, in which David Weston of Logan, Utah and Lonnie Fuller of Arizona were involved; Challenger Foundation in Utah in which Kristen Chase died; and other schools in Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and Costa Rica. Pamela Elliott, a California attorney, is suing Pacific Coast Academy on behalf of her son and other parents who had children at Pacific Coast Academy.

Daily Bee that reported: “the largest court settlement against a school in Bonner County history…reached between two former students and …CEDU Educational Services Inc. ON TRACK PROGRAM VOLUNTARILY POSTPONES ADMISSIONS
(November 5, 2002) Officials at On Track, Mason, Texas, 915-347-1400, a therapeutic adventure program, have voluntarily postponed admission until authorities complete their inquiries into the recent death of a 17 year-old program participant. According to spokeswoman Diane Huggins, the decision is based on the program’s interest in facilitating the investigative process without compromising their commitment to operate a quality program. The decision was not prompted by directives or guidance from regulatory agencies.
