NEW ADMINISTRATOR AT THREE SPRINGS OF NORTH CAROLINA
(Dec 30, 1999) As of Jan 2000 Richard Edwards will become the new administrator of Three Springs of North Carolina, (919-542-1104), replacing Peggy Reeder-Moore.

NEW TEEN MOTIVATION AND CONSULTING GROUP FORMED
(Jan 2, 2000) Rich Schroeder M.A. and Lynn Taylor, B.A. have formed a group called TMO Teen Motivation and Program Consulting, to be based in Albuquerque NM (505-797-2824). They have been program consultants for four years in northern New Mexico, and they run a monthly Parent Support Group for Struggling Teens. Rich just finished a tour of wilderness and school programs in Utah and Arizona.

ICARE CHANGES NAME, ESTABLISHES RUNAWAY HOTLINE
(Jan 4, 2000) John C. Villines announced ICARE Youth Services Division’s name has been changed to “Center for Safe Youth,” coinciding with their January, 2000 celebration, and marking the beginning of their 26th year providing adolescent escorts and locating runaways. They have also established a toll free “Runaway Hotline,” accessible through their website.

RED ROCK CANYON SCHOOL ENROLLS STUDENTS FROM INTERNET
(Jan 6, 2000) Todd Hockenberry, Marketing Director for Red Rock Canyon School, St. George Utah, 800-635-0994 a new treatment center, announced they now have fifteen new students, almost half of whom have been placed as a result of the Internet, including the link from Woodbury Reports Online.

POSITIVE IMPACT HOSTS FAMILY CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION
(Jan 4, 2000) Over 70 people, including 12 families, visited the campus of positive Impact in Mexico during the Christmas season. They enjoyed a pork loin buffet dinner and entertainment at an island restaurant on Christmas Eve. Families participated in over 30 family therapy sessions, an experimental multi-family group on the Sea of Cortez shoreline, and boat tours of abundant wildlife on Pelican Island.

“SUMMER PROGRAMS” LISTINGS ON WOODBURY ON-LINE
(Jan 8, 2000) Summers Programs can now be accessed by a special “button” on the front page of the Woodbury Reports’ website. Visits to this award-web site have continued to increase, according to an independent tracking service.

LANDMARK COLLEGE SUMMER PROGRAM FOR LD, ADHD STUDENTS
(Dec 27, 2000) Landmark College, Putney, Vermont, or admissions@landmarkcollege.org, announced a full summer schedule of classes for college bound high potential students with dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other specific learning disabilities. The daily schedule includes a tutorial with a faculty member, writing-based English, study skills focusing on information and time-management strategies, and either mathematics of speech communication. Summer courses are identical to courses described in the catalog for fall and spring terms.

POSITIVE IMPACT CLOTHING DONATION PROGRAM IN OLD KINO
(Jan 7, 2000) Positive Impact, residential treatment program in Bahia de Kino, started their clothing donation program by transporting 600 pounds of used clothing to the local Roman Catholic Church in Old Kino, for distribution. FAMILIES SUE FOUNDER OF DEFUNCT NEW HOPE ACADEMY
(Dec 28, 1999) [reported by Susan Kreifels of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin] Mekeli Ieremia, chief executive officer of the defunct New Hope Academy in Samoa was named as defendant in a lawsuit brought by 11 mainland families, with allegations of child abuse, inadequate services and stolen tuition money. Also named in the suit, filed Dec. 17 in U.SA. District Court in Utah, are other academy officials and Ohio-based KeyBank, which provided student tuition loans to the families. The suit claims none of the families were reimbursed for their $20,000 to $80,000 when New Hope Academy shut down in January, leaving five hungry teens stranded on the Pacific Island, according to U.S. Government claims. Ieremia also started the Aloha Youth Academy in Laie, which was shut down in November for inadequate licensing. Jeff Pluenacher, former Aloha Youth Academy Director, said Ieremia abandoned the academy and that he doesn’t know his whereabouts. In October, Ieremia was suspended from his job in El Paso, Texas, after $4.7 million in workers’ compensation funds under his supervision, was discovered missing. The FBI and Texas authorities are still investigating.

They are also implementing program changes as a result of input from professionals, parents and students and are offering an alumni course with a variety of outdoor activities taking place in such diverse parts of Maine as Mt. Katadin, Acadia National Park, and historic Bal Harbor.

LIMITATIONS ON TEACHER’S CAREER
(Jan. 11, 2000) Senn Brown, Treasurer of the Association of Educators in Private Practice (AEPP), 800-252-3280, in an essay announcing the organization’s annual conference in Detroit, Michigan on July 27-29, 2000, pointed out that teachers are alone among all professionals in that to work in the field a person must usually work for someone else, that is be an employee. He stated that a major reason for the formation of AEPP was to encourage entrepreneurship in education so teachers could gain the option of working for themselves as do all the other professions such as accountants, dentists, lawyers, architects, etc.

SECOND NATURE TO START 4TH GROUP
(February 1, 2000) Scott Canter, Director of Admissions for Second Nature, Duchesne, Utah, 818-906- 9611, announced that due to increased demand, Second Nature will be starting a 4th group of seven students on February 22, 2000. This is to reduce enrollment delays that have been occurring with only three groups at a time. Each group will have seven students with one additional “Flex Space” giving four spaces to accommodate emergency admissions and program extensions. The primary therapist for this additional group will be Dr. Rick Meeves.

WILDERNESS THERAPY: ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
(January 10, 2000) Larry Wells, founder and Director of Wilderness Quest, Monticello, Utah, 208-522-1080, a wilderness adapted 12-step program, presented a paper in a workshop at the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NAPSAP) in Tampa, Florida entitled “Wilderness Therapy: Advantages and Disadvantages.” Drawing on his experiences running wilderness programs for “troubled teens” since 1971, Wells summarized what is known about when wilderness programs can be helpful and when they cannot. ASPEN ACHIEVEMENT ACADEMY LENGTHENS GRADUATION
(January 28, 2000) Aspen Achievement Academy, a wilderness program centered in Loa, Utah, 435-836-2472, announced they have extended the graduation to four days, and renamed it Reunion. Part of the changes include a full day Parent meeting, while the students are demonstrating “their newfound confidence and inner-strength on the high ropes course.” Parent-student solos are now two nights.

SAD NEWS
(February 4, 2000) Woodbury Reports was notified that Dave Gaerin passed away this morning at 9:00 AM. Residing in Del Mar California. Dave has been a well known educational consultant referring to and transporting young people to many emotional growth schools and programs and therapeutic facilities around the country. I first met Dave a little over ten years ago and have been in contact with him off and on ever since including sharing meals with him in his home. My last contact with him was a few months ago when he seemed optimistic about getting on top of his illness. He will be missed. -Lon.
