IDAHO YOUTH RANCH FEATURED IN JUVENILE OFFENDER SOLUTIONS
(January 2000). Mike Jones, President of Idaho Youth Ranch, Boise, Idaho, 208-377-2613, announced the Ranch was featured in the First Issue of Juvenile Offender Solutions published January/February, 2000. The article about the Ranch was the featured article in this new publication. The story focused primarily on the Ranch’s horse program, which they started in 1974 and now includes up to 20 horses. Each child has daily involvement with the horses, ranging from “grooming and tack to animal psychology, biology, care and, of course, riding.”

TEENS IN TURMOIL BOOK SIGNING
(January 22, 2000) Lon Woodbury, publisher of Woodbury Reports and a Certified Educational Planner, joined Dr. Carol Maxym, 858-794-0887, in her first book signing party in Honolulu, Hawaii for the book co-authored by Carol Maxym and Leslie York, “Teens in Turmoil.”

NO CHARGES IN CAMPER’S DEATH
(February 24, 2000) The St. Petersburg Times Online, reported a grand jury decided not to bring criminal charges against the Eckerd wilderness camp counselor who restrained a 12-year-old boy who later died, “but instead blamed the state for failing to give the boy proper mental health treatment.” They concluded the counselor “properly followed restraint policies.” The grand jury concluded that for years, the state had not provided the boy recommended residential mental health treatment. “Had he been placed in what we considered the obviously needed program earlier in his involvement in the juvenile justice system, he would not have been in Eckerd E-Kel-Etu camp.”

DR. DANIEL HUGHES JOINS VILLA SANTA MARIA
(March 7, 2000) Joseph J. McGuill, Chief Executive Officer for Villa Santa Maria, Cedar Crest, NM, 800-453-5037, Attachkids@aol.com, a program specializing in children with Reactive Attachment Disorder, announced the addition to their staff of Dr. Daniel Hughes as Clinical Consultant. As one of the country’s foremost experts on attachment, child abuse, foster care and adoption, Dr. Hughes “will provide intensive family therapy on campus and ongoing training with our Therapists and Child Care Workers.”

PROVO CANYON STAFF CHANGE
(March 8, 2000) Denise Westman, Representative for Provo Canyon School, Provo, Utah, 619-588-7499, announced Jared Weight has been promoted to the Director of Group Living. Prior to his promotion, he had been the Assistant Director of Group Living and has been with Provo Canyon School for 19 years.

CALLAHAN ESTABLISHES PRACTICE
(March 9, 2000) Thomas Callahan, Ph.D., Newport, RI, 401-845-6682, ThosCallahan@home.com, announced he established his practice on Feb. 1, 2000 providing Psycho educational Evaluation and Special Needs Placement. An important part of Callahan’s practice is traveling to the client, which he does anywhere in the country. “Parents appreciate the convenience and I believe that it constitutes best practice.”

(March 10, 2000) The past issues of the Woodbury Reports newsletter Places for Struggling Teens is now online through 1996. The complete text of all issues starting with #1 in November 1989 to the end of 1996 is included. Additional issues are continuing to be placed online.

SOLTREKS HONORED
(March 14, 2000) Lorri Hanna and Doug Sabo, founders of Soltreks, Inc., 218-525-5803, Duluth, Minnesota, which offers a variety of wilderness experiences, were nominated for an award to recognize leadership in business management and community service by micro businesses in northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. They were also featured in the newsletter Entrepreneurs’ Connection, a program of the North Star Community Development Corporation in Duluth, Minnesota that nurtures entrepreneurs’ success through professional development and shared experience.

ASPEN YOUTH SERVICES STAFF IN BONNERS FERRY
(March 2, 2000) Several staff from Aspen Youth Services stopped by briefly during a hectic tour of the North Idaho CEDU Schools, including Gil Hallows, Director of Aspen Achievement Academy, Mike Errin, Admissions Director for SUWS, Pam Parson, Clinical Director for Aspen Achievement Academy, and Brad Gerrard, Business Development Director for Aspen Youth Services.

BANKRUPTCY TO NOT IMPACT PROVO CANYON SCHOOL
(March 14, 2000) Jeff Smith, CEO of Provo Canyon School, 800-848-9819, announced that the filing of Chapter 11 reorganization by Charter Behavioral Health Systems on February 16th “would not affect the quality of clinical programs and operations at the School.” Since Provo Canyon School is independent of the other Charter facilities, it is not for sale and is not going to close despite what happens to the other Charter facilities, according to Smith.

WOODHALL SCHOOL SUMMER 2000
(March 15, 2000) The Woodhall School, Bethlehem, CT, 203-266-7788, woodhall@wtco.net, announced their summer session will start June 29th and last through August 2, 2000. “The Woodhall Summer Program is designed to help students break the cycle of school failure.” The School announces that boys who can benefit from a Woodhall Summer include those who lack self confidence and self esteem, lack motivation and have: low achievement, difficulty with academic and study skills, difficulty concentrating or paying attention, health or family related issues, and/or need to develop proficiency in English language skills.

(February 29, 2000) Denise Westman, 619-588-7499, representative of Provo Canyon School, Provo, Utah, stopped by Woodbury Reports Inc. in Bonners Ferry, Idaho on a tour visiting professionals in the North Idaho area.

SAGEWALK HAS NEW OWNERS, MANAGERS
(March 16, 2000) Chris Kocurek, CEO of Therapeutic Expeditions, headquartered in Austin, Texas, 512-236-8776, announced they have agreed take responsibility for SageWalk operations, as requested by the current owners of SageWalk. From another source, Woodbury Reports has heard that Blaine Fisher is the new Field Director for the Bend, Oregon wilderness program.

RITTENBERG WORKS AS EDUCATIONAL CONSULTANT
(March 17, 2000) Helen Rittenbert, Waban, MA, 617-527-1239, contacted Woodbury Reports to tell us she is working as an Educational Consultant. A former elementary teacher and school principal, and Certified NASP, she has been a licensed Educational Psychologist in private practice for 13 years, doing diagnostic evaluations, academic and behavioral interventions with children and families and child advocacy.

FRIENDS OF SPECIAL SCHOOLS ENDOWMENT
(March 17, 2000) Kelly Ross, Executive Director of The Friends of Special Schools, announced they have created this organization as a non-profit [501 (C) 3] organization to serve children and the parents of children who require special schooling. It was originally formed in 1997, and can be found on the web at Specialneedschildren.com.

SOLTREKS LOOKING FOR WILDERNESS INSTRUCTORS
(March 21, 2000) Lori Hanna, Co-Founder/Co-Director of Soltreks, Duluth, Minn., 218-525- 5803, soltreks@computerpro.com, a small therapeutic adventure based program announced they are looking for wilderness instructors with at least 3 years experience working with youth at-risk. The positions will be for this summer. Internships are also available.

ARMBRUSTER TO LEAVE CEDU
(March 21, 2000) Lori Armbruster, Consultant Services for The CEDU Family of Services, 208-265-0607, announced she would be leaving CEDU as of April 7, 2000. Lori says she has been considering this for some time, and her resignation has no relation to other changes that have been happening at CEDU. She will be working in a regional office of an international company outside the Special Needs field, but will remain connected to that field through freelance projects with Saul Rudman.

VOYAGEUR OUTWARD BOUND ASCENT
(March 22, 2000) Hurricane Island and Pacific Crest Outward Bound are no longer offering Ascent courses that go beyond the basic wilderness experience, designed for children making poor decisions. However, Voyageur Outward Bound, based in Minnesota still offers Ascent courses for 14-17 year olds. This year they offer nine 28-day sessions with the first session beginning on May 7, 2000 and the last session starting September 10, 2000.

3RD ANNUAL LLAMA ADVENTURE
(March 25, 2000) Sue Crowell, Director of SUWS Programs, Shoshone, Idaho, 888-667-7897, announced their 3rd Annual Great Llama Adventure will be June 16-18, 2000. This particular event, is designed for educational consultants only, as a way for them to experience the program. It will be limited to 20 respondents.

TILLES RETIRES FROM CASCADE SCHOOL
(March 27, 2000) Michael Allgood, Headmaster of Cascade School, 530-472-3031, announced the retirement of Gayle Tilles, the school’s Associate Head and one of the founders of the school. He also announced the appointments of Suzanne Caswell as Director of Studies, and Sunny Weir as Director of Admissions. Rounding out the admission department is the well-known Judy Becks, and two new faces, George Rogers and Hallie Griggs.
