Shortridge Academy announces the establishment of its inaugural Merit Scholarship Program for the Arts. Beginning in April 2012, the program is open to new female applicants who demonstrate excellence in, and passion for, artistic endeavors that can be supported by the Shortridge Academy Program. Awards will be offered in the form of reduced tuition for their stay at Shortridge, subject to maintaining a 3.0 GPA.
The founding members of the Scholarship Committee are:
Anne Downey, BA, MA, PhD (Chair), Director of Studies
Philip Zaeder, BA, MDiv, Trustee (formerly Dean of Faculty, Phillips Academy, Andover, MA)
Lisa Long, BFA, Instructor of Art
Frank Anthony, BA, Admissions Officer
"We have been steadily building our Arts program, and recently completed construction of our dark room, which has been a huge hit with our students," says Anne Downey. "Plans for music and film production are in the works as well, and we're thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity to a worthy candidate." "I really like the art program at Shortridge because it's structured so that students can explore all different kinds of media, and I think that's essential to developing as an artist," says student Elena H.
The Shortridge Academy Arts Program consists of formal art curriculum as well as opportunities for elective work in areas of technology arts including music production and photography. Facilities include a dark room, music production studio, art studio with kiln and off campus arts related activities and trips. Current students' work will be on display at the upcoming IECA Foundation Art Auction in Boston. Shortridge Academy Arts Program students have recently been accepted at School of Visual Arts (NYC), Maine College of Art, Chicago Institute School of Art, and Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). For more information on the Arts Merit Scholarship, contact Dr. Anne Downey.
Shortridge Academy is a year round, college preparatory, therapeutic boarding school for young men and women ages 14-18 years old, grades 9-12. Shortridge Academy is one of only a few therapeutic boarding schools in the Northeast accredited by the rigorous New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the only school of its kind that explicitly utilizes the evidenced-based Positive Youth Development (PYD) philosophy to guide the individualized therapeutic programming for students. Since 2002, Shortridge Academy has been helping students and families who are struggling with academic performance, loss of interest in activities and increased conflict in family or peer relationships.
