The Shortridge Academy Counseling Services team is pleased to announce the addition of Cara Langevin to the professional staff of the school. Cara has a B.A. in Social Work from the University of New Hampshire and a dual M.A. in Expressive Therapies and Mental Health Counseling, Art Therapy Specialization from Lesley University, Cambridge MA. Cara is close to completing the requirements for Master's level LADC license as well.
Cara brings to Shortridge Academy experience from various local counseling arenas and most recently she provided substance abuse counseling to chemically dependency patients. For five years prior to that she was an Advocate for Sexual Assault Support Services in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. During her time at Lesley University she completed clinical internships in alternative high schools in the Boston area. Cara is originally from southern coastal Maine.
Cara has experience with at-risk youth, anxiety, depression, addiction, recovery, trauma, and grief and loss. She believes that art making has the capacity to heal wounds of all sizes, and emphasizes that one does not have to be a "good artist" to create meaningful, therapeutically beneficial art. Cara is passionate about incorporating art therapy into the therapeutic curriculum at Shortridge. When she's not at school you can find her swimming laps, on the yoga mat, or spending time with her husband and their dog "Luna."
The Counseling Services Team at Shortridge consists of master's prepared clinicians working as part of a team of academic advisors and residential life staff to support a caseload of 6-10 students. The counseling team is comprised of 7 clinical counselors reporting to Kay Patch, Clinical Director. Counselors provide weekly individual counseling, facilitate the weekly groups including a series of specialty/theme groups, and develop and revise the strengths-based Positive Development Plans (PDP) for their assigned students. Regular updates to consultants and family work are also the responsibility of the Counselor.
Shortridge Academy is a year round, college preparatory, therapeutic boarding school for young men and women ages 14-17 years old at enrollment, grades 9-12. Shortridge Academy is one of only a few therapeutic boarding schools in the Northeast accredited by the rigorous New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the only school of its kind that explicitly utilizes the evidenced-based Positive Youth Development (PYD) philosophy to guide the individualized therapeutic programming for students. Since 2002, Shortridge Academy has been helping students and families who are struggling with academic performance, loss of interest in activities and increased conflict in family or peer relationships.
