Shortridge Academy Founder Adam Rainer and Research Consultant Dr. Kristine Baber recently co-authored an invited chapter in the series, Advances in Child Development and Behavior, Volume 41, September 2011. A copy of the chapter, Shortridge Academy: Positive Youth Development in Action within a Therapeutic Community can be accessed by contacting Shortridge Academy or the series in its entirety is available on amazon.com.
This chapter represents the first publication describing in detail Shortridge Academy's redesigned program for embracing Positive Youth Development (PYD) while systematically implementing its formal Program Evaluation. The chapter includes a discussion of the history of Shortridge Academy and its implementation of a PYD perspective, a description of the unique approaches to managing an authoritative community in a therapeutic boarding school environment, and an identification of strategies and examples of power-sharing and staff-student partnerships in running the daily operations of the school. Additionally, the chapter contains information on challenges and opportunities in starting a PYD infused program, such as methods to measure program effectiveness through research.
