Recently, Shortridge Academy celebrated the National Day on Writing with a slew of writing activities during our Wednesday 1-2 PM special topic/student assembly block. Students participated in activities in our Great Room in the east wing of our main facility.
Established by the National Council of Teachers of English in 2009, the National Day on writing points to the importance of writing instruction and practice at every grade level, emphasizes the lifelong process of learning to write, and encourages Americans of all ages to enjoy writing.
Students participated in a Six-Word Memoir Contest, a Create-the-Caption contest (student Elena H drew the cartoon), a Haiku contest, a Write-Your-Life-from-A-Z Contest, and on-going Scrabble Slam and Boggle games. Contest winners will be treated to lunch off-campus with the English Department.
Winning entries included the six-word memoirs, "Worries collect like dinner party guests" by student Braden B, and "Finding self, be back in 5" by Willson G.
Shortridge Academy is a year round, college preparatory, therapeutic boarding school for young men and women ages 14-17 years old at enrollment, grades 9-12. Shortridge Academy is one of only a few therapeutic boarding schools in the Northeast accredited by the rigorous New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and the only school of its kind that explicitly utilizes the evidenced-based Positive Youth Development (PYD) philosophy to guide the individualized therapeutic programming for students. Since 2002, Shortridge Academy has been helping students and families who are struggling with academic performance, loss of interest in activities and increased conflict in family or peer relationships.
