Founded in 1968, Sheridan House is a Christian-based residential care center for boys and girls ages 11 to 14 who are experiencing mild to moderate behavioral problems such as academic suspension or failure, disruptive family behavior, immaturity, acting out, poor impulse control, and defiant behavior. The program is meant to be an earlier intervention into behavioral issues before the problems become habitual. The average stay is 10 to 12 months.
Executive director of Sheridan House Family Ministries Dr. Robert Barnes is a well known family issues counselor, author of multiple books and marriage and family issues. He and his wife, Rosemary Barnes frequently give lectures and seminars on family issues as well as co-author books.
Sheridan House operates a 5 day program where the children spend the weekdays at the residential center and the weekends and holidays with their families. The program focuses on life skills development and uses a point system for each child to measure progress. Parents are also asked to assess weekend behavior and their assessments are used to set goals and determine privileges for the child during the week. Graduation from the program requires the accumulation of 6000 points. The facility also operates a Counseling Center for the youth in the program as well as local parents and children,
The program also consists of parent training and education on methods for dealing with behavioral issues with their children. They are instructed on successful re-integration of their child into regular home life and school post program participation.
