Q&A Associates has added new program delineations to the Journey to Authentic Self Young Adult Program in Davis, WV. "We have grown over the past year, and it became necessary to put more emphasis and definition to our services for young men and young women," says owner Angie Shockley. To that end, the program now offers Applewood Transitions for Young Woman and The Journey Transitions for Young Men.
Both programs provide opportunities for emerging young adults to explore and practice real life skills which will allow them to transition to independent living. The young women of Applewood Transitions live and work in Applewood Inn which also houses The Breakfast Nook, a breakfast only restaurant open seven days per week from 6:00-11:00 AM. The clients are given the opportunity to learn the restaurant business from the kitchen to the customers to the marketing plan. As clients grow, they are provided opportunities to work in the surrounding community, as well.
Young men participating in The Journey live in historical homes in the small town of Davis, WV. As they progress through the life skills curriculum, they are given the opportunity to gain employment in a community work environment which can range from restaurants to ski resorts to construction sites.
Participants in both The Journey and Applewood get experience at Timberline Stables, working with the horses and learning how to operate a commercial riding stable. Several of our clients have completed the Junior Wrangler program and have become trail guides for the Stable. "The interaction with the horses is invaluable for our clients;" says Shockley. "Horse behavior mimics human behavior which allows our clients to practice their interpersonal skills in a challenging yet safe environment."
