Celebrates Anniversary

Its been a good year at Point School.

Point School is a unique residential community that provides individualized educational services and strengths-based clinical therapy, to students aged 17-24, who are struggling. Our Caribbean location and professional staff provide students opportunities to develop their identities and embrace their individual journey to independence.

Celebrating its first year of operation, the School has served five students who lived in the dorm from one to eight months. Students Educational accomplishments this year were High School courses and diplomas, college exploration courses, and college applications and acceptance. Students got their driver's license, learned to cook meals, do laundry, and co-exist in a dorm. Families participated in Clinical Coaching, identifying and prioritizing future expectations and aspirations for their son. Students made some great progress in individual therapy: maintaining their sobriety, developing their identities, and repairing their relationships. Students took advantage of surf instruction, open water dive certifications, and community service events. Point School Mentors guided students in local Spanish culture and language and led some great island trips from the rain forest to the waterfalls to the coral reefs on the South Coast.

Students attending Point School are in transition to establishing individual identities from their families. The process we provide is structured around helping students improve communication with family as an adult member while processing expectations and accepting limits. Students are able to plan their lives and future, address issues that have inhibited them, practice a balanced and healthy lifestyle, and develop essential skills for future independence.

Point School enrolls students year-round with up to five students sharing single family homes. The West Coast of Puerto Rico is a mecca for surfing and diving. Students participate in numerous experiential activities and explore the warm and traditional culture as a participant in this island community.
