The Pine River Institute is an innovative co-ed residential therapeutic school for teen's ages 13-19 years old, struggling with addictive behaviors. Our Program fuses education and therapy (group, individual, family, milieu, recreational) through 4 phases: Wilderness, Education, Transition and Aftercare.

We are currently seeking strong, experienced Wilderness Field Instructors to help us deliver this exciting program in Algonquin Park, with a mid-September starting date.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
We are looking for individuals with the qualifications and related experience in Wilderness field work, demonstrated sound judgment, an ability to maintain clear boundaries, integrity, patience, commitment, a sense of humor, and a commitment to a personal philosophy that is congruent with the Pine River Institute.

Required qualifications are:

  • WFR or Adv WFA with experience managing backcountry medical issues

  • Minimum Bronze Cross Certification with NLS preferred

  • Teaching level proficiency in a least three modes of wilderness travel (canoeing, hiking, snow shoeing)

  • B.A., B.Sc., or college diploma in related field

  • Experience working with at-risk youth and young adults in a wilderness setting

  • Valid Driver License an asset.



Key Responsibilities:
The primary responsibility of the Field Instructor is to deliver the Outdoor Leadership Experience program, ensure group safety, teach basic wilderness skills, solidify course logistics and through facilitation, maintain focus on the therapeutic elements of the wilderness experience.
