It is clear that there is a need for a program such as Penikese - and so we look forward to welcoming our first group of residents to the Island on June 23rd. Penikese, located on Penikese Island off the coast of Massachusetts, is the only program of its kind, marrying a wilderness-like experience with the unique experiential component that only an island setting can offer - to include boatbuilding, fishing, lobstering, and sailing. Unlike many wilderness programs, however, Penikese offers therapeutic support on a daily basis, with experienced, well-trained clinicians living on the Island 24/7.

Penikese serves young men ages 14 to 17 in need of treatment for their emotional, behavioral and mental health issues, along with their use or abuse of alcohol and/or other drugs. A typical length of stay varies from 45 to 120 days. Many residents have become alienated and isolated from family and friends. Many residents and their families have unsuccessfully tried to address their issues through other approaches, including outpatient treatment. Other residents have experienced periods of limited stability and sobriety, but have fallen back into old patterns. Ultimately, Penikese serves young men and their families with a desire to heal and rediscover their relationship. Those interested in referring struggling young men to Penikese should contact Mary Jo DeGrandi at mdegrandi@penikese.org.

Dr. David Gorenberg, a graduate of Amherst College and The University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, has recently been named Medical Director at Penikese. Prior to his move to Martha's Vineyard, Dr. Gorenberg maintained a private practice in Psychiatry for more than twenty-five years in Philadelphia. He has held positions at The University of Pennsylvania, Jefferson Medical University, and The Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital.

Interested in an opportunity to meet our experienced staff and take a tour of Penikese? Contact Carl Lovejoy, Penikese's Associate Executive Director, External Relations, at clovejoy@penikese.org to schedule a visit. A group tour is scheduled for July 13, but we would be happy to arrange an alternative date to accommodate your calendar.
