Sierra Friends Center is a program for high school graduates ages 18-25 that emphasizes personal challenges in the context of values, environmental and global awareness, and service. The Center is located on 230 acres of woods, creeks and ponds nestled within a valley of the Sierra Nevada foothills.
The Pathways Program at the Friends Center helps to encourage exploration into one’s inner “calling” through a combination of service opportunities, simplicity, and an awareness of environmental sustainability. The program is based on experiences outside of the traditional classroom and offers a place for reflection and an opportunity to deepen life’s perspective. Students can renew their enthusiasm for learning in more traditional settings through the Pathways Program. A maximum of ten students are accepted into each program session.
They also offer the Woolman Semester, which involves rigorous and interrelated classes designed to enhance the program’s focus on sustainability, peace, and social justice. These courses are “designed to be academically challenging and college preparatory, and are approved by the University of California system as fulfilling their requirements for matriculation. Students in the Woolman Semester earn 30 academic credits by enrolling in these required courses: World Problems, Environmental Science, Peace Studies, Humanities & Ethics. French or Spanish is also offered but not required. In addition, students earn 120 hours of community service in the program. They have rolling enrollments and encourage early application for the Fall Semester 03, which runs from August 22 – December 19, and Spring Semester 04, which is January 23 through May 21.
