Steve Schultz of Oxbow Academy recently submitted an update on happenings at Oxbow Academy.

"We are now in our 5th year and things don't seem to be slowing down.

"Here are some brief statistics you can use as you speak with parents;
60% - Students that are adopted
45% - Students with an IEP
65% - Students who struggle with NLD, Aspergers, ADHD or other co-morbid issues.

"We recognize the importance of having a "bed available" when we get a call from an Educational Consultant. The student has either acted out in another program and there is pressure to get them moved, or it has been discovered that there has been some inappropriate touching take place and the parents need to move their son quickly for safety as well as legal concerns. Each of these situations requires swift movement and the confidence that the student is in a safe and competent place.

"Because we have been able to observe this difference in the population, we have refined and personalized the care and treatment of all students. We now have Oxbow Academy East Campus and West Campus. Students are placed in the residential setting that best meets their individual "personality" and emotional needs. This will also expand our capacity, thus minimizing the need for a waiting list.

"So often, when dealing with sexual issues, what we as parents and professionals know is only the tip of the ice berg. Thus, we still provide the 90 day evaluation. This process helps the student go through the disclosure process, engages them in the therapeutic milieu and allows us to obtain a "functional Analysis" of the student while developing a complete and accurate treatment plan. It's important to remember, we only ask parents to commit to the first 90 days.

"If you haven't visited Oxbow Academy lately, I would encourage you to do so. I think you will be impressed.

"I have also included a blog post that I hope is helpful as you speak with parents. It addresses some of the biological effects of pornography on the brain as well as changes in pornography over the last 35 years.
