For the past decade Oakley has participated in an exchange program with a small school in Huesca, Spain. This past spring, a group of Oakley students traveled to Spain to visit our sister school. In return Oakley School students welcomed a group of nineteen Spanish students to our campus for eight days in early December.
During the visit, Spanish students were assigned to an Oakley School student mentor and stayed with local families to immerse themselves in our culture. The group and their mentors enjoyed a variety of activities, including cheering the Utah Jazz (NBA team), going on a Salt Lake City scavenger hunt, and visiting the Salt Lake City's Hogle Zoo. In addition, Spanish students attended classes and made presentations on Spanish culture to our Oakley students. To mark the end of their visit we bid farewell to our guests with a fun and light-hearted send-off dinner on the final evening of their stay.
The Spanish exchange program broadens our students' understanding of Spanish culture, provides them opportunities to practice their Spanish in a practical setting and builds friendships that last a lifetime. One Oakley student commented that she "loved spending time with her mentee and learned a lot of Spanish throughout the week." The visit certainly made an impact on hosts and guests alike, and Oakley hopes to return to Spain in the spring of 2014.
