John L. Santa, PhD, co-owner of Montana Academy is one of the many special guests Lon Woodbury, owner and President of Woodbury Reports, Inc. has lined up to speak at the 4th Annual Northwest Get Together on May 15, 2009.
John's presentation titled: A Developmental and Relationship Based Approach to Adolescent Struggles for Identity, will outline the developmental model that has evolved at Montana Academy, discussing some of the influences that have helped create the model. In addition, he will show how the model draws from and extends ideas that have been a part of many early alternative programs, including the CEDU Schools, as well as ideas that originate from theories of psychology, psychiatry and education.
Also briefly discussed will be the difference in diagnosis, approach, and level of intervention that is currently used in outpatient practice as contrasted with a level of understanding that is more useful in a residential setting. The distinction will be drawn between diagnosis and treatment of symptom clusters versus issues of personality development.
"At Montana Academy we use the concepts of immaturity and obstacles to development to help organize our understanding of individual students, and we see the process of maturation, or growing up, as the cure for most adolescent problems".
On a personal note, John is married to Carol Minnick Santa who is a PhD in Psychology of Reading and was the curriculum director of the Kalispell school system for many years as well as President of the International Reading Assoc. and author of several reading programs. Her brother Walt Minnick is a congressman in the Western District of Idaho, and a fellow graduate with Carol and John from Whitman College. John and Carol have two children, daughter Laura is a therapist in Michigan, who has worked at several NATSAP programs and has a three year old daughter and a 15 month old son and their son Sean, is a builder in Missoula and has two boys, a two year old and an 8 month old.
"Sean and Laura are both 32 years old and are only 19 days apart in age. Sean is adopted and has inspired much of our school by his own struggles that led him to Rocky Mountain Academy when he was 15".
