"I wanted to share the happy news that I dropped my son off at Cal Poly yesterday to start his engineering degree! He is excited to be there and seems determined to succeed. Many thanks to Northwest Academy for your help on this long journey. A year ago, we weren't sure this day would come. I know that it wouldn't have without your guidance and care," shared a Northwest Academy alumni parent.
This type of accolade is commonly heard on the campus of Northwest Academy. The therapeutic boarding school that was founded more than 20 years ago and serves the behavioral, clinical, substance abuse and academic needs of junior- and senior-aged students.
The campus is situated on a mountain plateau in the Selkirk Mountain range of Idaho and is surrounded by lush evergreen forests. Here students at-risk of not graduating from high school are re-engaged in academics. Students benefit from teacher-driven classes, academic coaching, adaptive technology, specialized instruction, small class sizes and extended time for testing. Plus, they examine their thoughts, feelings, behaviors and the relationships and patterns between them that have caused them to get off track academically. In addition, Northwest Academy's Guidance Counselor supports students through the post-secondary planning process. A typical student graduates from Northwest Academy with their high school diploma and anywhere from one to five college acceptances in hand.
"One of our recent graduates applied and was accepted to 19 colleges and universities," laughed Executive Director Dustin Cash. He continued to explain that students also participate in a college-readiness program that prepares them to be successful both academically and personally.
"So far things are looking good for our Northwest Academy graduate. He reports that he is sitting in the front row of his college classes; he introduced himself to his teachers on the first day of school; he attended an extra credit lecture the second week of school; and he is living in a sober dorm," explained an alumni parent.
At Northwest Academy students repair their grade point average, rekindle their desire to attend college, apply and are accepted into college and participate in a therapeutic and character development program that enables them to address the issues that have gotten them off track. Students also learn important life skills and participate in a college readiness curriculum designed to help them be as prepared as possible for college life. Students leave Northwest Academy with a high school diploma in hand and the tools, motivation and confidence needed to lead a successful life.
Northwest Academy is a therapeutic boarding school for bright, college-capable students age 16–18 who are at risk of not completing high school due to self-destructive behaviors.
