Next Step Recovery House for Women started in 2009 is the sister program of Next Step Recovery for Men which was founded in 2006. This structured transitional living program is for women 18 and over who are recovering from alcohol and drug abuse. A commitment of at least 90 days and an immersion of the 12 step-AA or NA programs are required of their residents.

Mark Vander Galien, MS, LPC-A, NCC, is the director of the women's program and has previous experience working with women in clinical programs, wilderness therapy and other transitional living programs. Susan Stader, MS, LPC, LCAS is the founder and executive director of Next Step Recovery and specializes in substance abuse counseling issues.

Residents at Next Step reside in one of two fully furnished homes on the property with access to an onsite Japanese Gardens that has a waterfall, a reflective koi pond and tea house. Within this setting, residents receive relapse prevention classes, life skills training, 12 step support and group therapy. The women must obtain employment, volunteer or attend school full time and all residents are responsible to attend at least 3 AA/NA meetings a week and obtain a sponsor, in addition to following all house rules and agree to zero tolerance, which may include random drug and alcohol screening.

An outdoor adventure program is led on the weekends, with the women participating in hiking, mountain biking, camping and backpacking, fishing, rafting and rock climbing within the lush state and national forests of western North Carolina.
