This is an impactful month for addiction recovery awareness. First, the entire month of September has been deemed National Recovery Month. The official website
www.recoverymonth.gov states, "Recovery Month promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for mental and substance use disorders, celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of treatment and service providers, and promotes the message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover."
Second, a first-of-its-kind movement is coming to our nation's capital. On October 4th, the inaugural UNITE to Face Addiction Rally will occur on the grounds of the National Mall. The event will feature musical performances, inspirational speakers, and remarks by celebrities, elected officials, and other advocates. Visit
www.facingaddiction.org for more details.
Wherever you are, it is likely that a Recovery Month event is happening close to you. I hope that you consider attending or participating in some way. Events such as those and the Rally in DC bring a much-needed voice to addiction, treatment, and recovery.
Sincerely,
Susan Stader, MS, LPC, LCAS
