Newport Academy is proud to announce that its' Chair of Addiction Medicine, David Smith, MD, FASAM, FAACT, will be presented the Annual Award at the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) during the ASAM awards luncheon on April 17, 2010. This award is given annually for "outstanding contributions to the growth and vitality of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, for thoughtful leadership in the field, and for a deep understanding of the art and science of Addiction Medicine."
This award will be presented at the annual ASAM conference being held in San Francisco, CA April 15-18, 2010. ASAM is an association of physicians dedicated to improving the treatment of alcoholism, drug dependence and other addictions, educating physicians and medical students, promoting research and prevention, and enlightening and informing the medical community and the public about these important issues.
Dr. David Smith is the Chair of Addiction Medicine for Newport Academy and recognized as a national leader in the areas of the addiction treatment, the psychopharmacology of drugs, new research strategies in the management of drug abuse problems, and proper prescribing practices for physicians. He is the Founder of the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinics in San Francisco, which treats over 160,000 client visits per year in 23 sites in the San Francisco Bay area.
Dr. Smith is currently the Chair of Adolescent Addiction Treatment for Newport Academy, a gender-specific, comprehensive, residential treatment center and outpatient program for adolescents suffering from substance abuse and co-occurring disorders in Orange County, CA. In addition to his work at the teen alcohol and drug rehab center, Smith is also the Medical Director for Center Point, a 6 month therapeutic community in San Rafael, CA. Center Point is a private, not-for-profit corporation providing comprehensive, integrated services to at-risk individuals and families.
Dr. Smith's current and past appointments include Medical Director of the California State Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs, Medical Director of the California Collaborative Center for Substance Abuse Policy Research, Adjunct Professor at the University of California, San Francisco, and Fellow and Past President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine and of the California Society of Addiction Medicine.
Dr. Smith is the Founder and Publisher of the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs and Member, Editorial Board, Journal of Addiction Medicine. In addition, he has authored or co-authored 26 books, written over 340 journal articles, edited 28 journals, and has been the technical consultant for 28 drug abuse-related films.
