ABC's Channel 4 Good Morning Utah show interviewed Jeana Lee, LMFT, New Haven's Assistant Clinical Director, and Kip Rasmussen, LMFT, Ph.D., an eating disorder specialist working at New Haven.
Ms. Lee and Mr. Rasmussen provided the following statistics to the show's host:
50% of all Americans personally know someone with an eating disorder
7 million women and 1 million men suffer from an eating disorder
1 in 10 people received treatment to combat an eating disorder
The show's host asked Ms. Lee what signs parents ought to look for when they suspect an eating disorder. Ms. Lee said that "deeper feelings of depression, expressions of dislike for self, feeling unworthy and unlovable, changes in eating habits and dress, and isolation" are all signs of a possible eating disorder.
Mr. Rasmussen said that parents are the key to helping prevent eating disorders if they "accept their kids for things that are more genuine and at the core, rather than achievement or appearance". "If kids look at the world and say, 'I have to be a certain way to be okay", then you have the roots of an eating disorder," he said.
