NATWC invites you to attend our first Counselor Certification Training. Conducted by the experienced facilitators of Peak Experience Training, the elements of this module are adapted from their highly-regarded Clinical First Responder course and the requirements of the NATWC Counselor Certification. This course requires a high level of participation, and in return offers an impactful experience that will directly affect your competence working with others.
Dates: October 24-25 (arrival October 23 evening)
Location: Talisman Summer Camp, near Hendersonville, NC
Cost: $270 for staff of NATWC-member organizations ($300 for non-members)
Includes: Training, Room and Board (lodging 10/23 and 10/24)
Curriculum is guided by requirements in the NATWC Counselor Certification, including:
- Adventure based Facilitation
- Adolescent Development
- Communication Skills
- Theoretical Perspectives
- Boundaries & Ethics
- Developing a Therapeutic Alliance
Certification - Staff of member programs who bring all paperwork for their counselor certification level will be offered one level for free during this training only!
Accommodations - Camp setting with large, multi-person rooms with bunk beds. These will be single-gender. Connected communal bathrooms. Building is heated if necessary.
Meals - Begin with breakfast on Monday morning and conclude with lunch on Tuesday. Vegetarian diets accommodated if noted on the application. All other special needs, please bring your own substitutions.
Bring - sleeping bag or sheets and blankets, pillow, towels and toiletries, water bottle. Also, layered clothing (weather in October can range from 30's to 80's and wet or dry).
Not allowed - drugs, alcohol, pets, weapons, unpaid friends. Smoking only in designated areas.
Your Instructors:
Dr. Scott Bandoroff is a licensed psychologist specializing in the use of adventure therapy for the treatment of teens and families. Scott has worked in the wilderness and adventure therapy field for over 20 years as a field staff, therapist and clinical director, and established his own wilderness program within the juvenile justice system. Currently, Scott leads wilderness family therapy experiences and maintains a private practice in Ashland, OR. He is well-known in the adventure therapy field through his publications and presentations in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Bandoroff, along with Dr. Newes, co-edited Coming of Age: The Evolving Field of Adventure Therapy.
Dr. Sandy Newes is a licensed psychologist and founder/director of clear View Psychological services in Asheville, NC: an agency combining traditional psychological services with experiential activities for adolescents, adults, and families. Sandy has been active in the wilderness and adventure therapy field for over 10 years and currently provides independent psychological assessment services, organizational consultation, evaluation, and training. Sandy focused her doctoral work on applying clinical concepts to wilderness therapy, and draws on that to help staff understand these concepts in ways that are straightforward and practical.
