The founder of My Town Tutors is Mark Molloy, a High School teacher in Massachusetts. Seeing the interest in many parents to find a tutor for their child, he conceived of My Town Tutors in 2008.
The basic idea was to build a web site that parents could visit that has a database of professional teachers willing to take on additional work in individual tutoring dealing directly with parents and the student. Molloy started with the basic assumption that the best groups of people prepared to be tutors were teachers themselves. He developed the web site and began recruiting local teachers to participate, and then letting parents know of their availability.
The plan worked with Massachusetts teachers and parents according to the testimonials on their site. Now, Molloy is expanding his reach by aiming at having registered tutors in every state.
To register as a tutor, a person must be a current or retired teacher and supply the name of the school they teach (or taught) at. My Town Tutors will contact that school for verification.
Once the applying tutor is verified, he/she can create a profile. Your profile contains a personal statement, the subjects you teach, and your daily availability.
Parents, students and guidance counselors can then search for you at MyTownTutors.com, read your personal statement, and choose to contact you through the web site regarding availability.
You and the client find a convenient date and time, and the tutoring session is then confirmed. You make payment arrangements directly with the client. The only fees My Town Tutors charges is $12 for a year's listing. Their credit card billing service can be used for a small percentage of the transaction.
The service has been successful in Massachusetts and Molloy is currently aggressively recruiting teachers as tutors throughout the country. If you want to check this out as a possible tutor, check the web site and/or contact Molloy. If you are a parent or guidance counselor interested in finding a tutor, just check the web site and put your zip code in the search box.
