A Six Day, 50 mile, Cattle Drive He Will Never Forget
On the vast prairie plains of northwestern Wyoming, you may catch a glimpse of frontier history. Cowboys in the traditions of the early settlers herding their cattle to greener pastures, astride their horses wearing cowboy hats, chaps and spurs, moving the herd down the long dusty trail. There is one thing different about these "cowboys", for many it is their first time ever riding a horse much less herding cattle! Some of these young men come from inner city life and have left behind them drugs, alcohol and downward spiraling lives. It was their parents who sent them to Mount Carmel Youth Ranch in a desperate attempt to get their son off of the destructive path he was on, and give him a chance to recover from drug addictions, theft, and dealings with the law.
Mount Carmel Youth Ranch offers something that very few "at-risk" programs can and that is an authentic experience of a western adventure. As a real working cattle ranch, the work itself is the cornerstone of the proven effective "reality therapy" that has helped hundreds of troubled teenage boys who were fortunate enough to come to Mount Carmel. ""Reality Therapy" is effective because the boys know that this is REAL and not just something that was created artificially to be "therapeutic" for them," states Jerry Schneider when asked why their approach to helping teens has been so successful. "It is the authenticity of the work that helps these young men discover who they really are and what they are capable of doing with their lives. Once these young men discover a sense of self worth and purpose in life, they have the strength of character to move beyond the self indulgent and destructive lifestyle that brought them to Mount Carmel Youth Ranch," Jerry concludes.
Mount Carmel Youth Ranch offers a comprehensive program that teaches life skills to help improve every area of the young man's life. The program is Christian and allows each of the young men an opportunity to grow or develop a deeper relationship with God. The relationship skills that they learn help the young men relate better with their parents and siblings. Parents often comment on how respectful their sons have become and how much more caring and considerate of others they are now. "Theses life skills are a very important component to their recovery from substance abuse and other destructive behavior choices," states Susan George, Mount Carmel's Life Skills instructor. "When you help the young men realize that their destructive choices are rooted in selfishness and fear, they begin the process of discovering the strength within themselves to choose what is best for others and not just what pleases them."
