Montcalm School, a private, therapeutic boarding school for boys and girls located in Albion, Mich., will open a new program for girls, ages 12-18, with autism spectrum disorders beginning Sept. 4.
Montcalm School has served boys with autism spectrum disorders through its Outside In program since 2007. With this expertise, Montcalm School has historically provided support services for girls enrolled in the traditional therapeutic program also diagnosed on the autism spectrum.
Due to an increase in the number of referrals and inquiries about services for girls with autism spectrum disorders, Montcalm School is opening this program with the belief that its success with the boys program will translate seamlessly to working with an ever larger population of girls.
"Montcalm has become a national leader for our work with youth on the autism spectrum," said Kelley Jones, Director of Montcalm. "Because of this success and the number of girls in need of these services, we believe this program is sustainable and will allow us to continue to help youth who face challenges socially, behaviorally and academically."
In addition to the girls Outside In program, Montcalm will continue to operate its traditional therapeutic girls program, also for ages 12-18.
Additional features of Outside In include a lower staff-to-student ratio than the traditional program, occupational therapy with a fully licensed, on-campus occupational therapist, access to Montcalm's Sensory Integration Room, and a battery of assessments, including the Woodcock Johnson Test of Achievement, the Ansell Casey Life Skills Assessment, the Occupational Therapy Sensory Profile, the Behavioral and Emotional Rating Scale and many more.
