Outdoor activities are an important part of each student's curriculum at Monarch School. These experiences are designed to teach lifelong skills that students can use as adults. They are also meant to boost confidence and help students realize the benefits of a relationship with the outdoors.

Monarch School students recently returned from a two-day outdoor trip exploring Glacier National Park. They set out to enjoy the great outdoors of Montana and grow closer as a community. During the two-day trip, students and staff prepared and cooked meals together over campfires and slept under the stars.

During the day they climbed seven adventurous miles to the "Haystack Pass," hiking on the popular "Highline Trail" and taking in the most scenic views in America at each turn. From their summit and lunch spot, they had a 360 degree view of the spectacular northern Rockies, the "Backbone of the World" as referred to by the Native Americans.

As they hiked to the pass, the Monarch School group spotted a variety of wildlife - for many it was their first time to see a mature grizzly bear (from afar), a black bear with its cubs playing in a nearby tree, a herd of mountain goats grazing in a field with their young, and a mountain goat and her baby on the trail.

The Glacier National Park trip was rewarding and educational for the Monarch School students and staff as they explored the park, the glaciers and the cycle of the wildlife.
