Medicine Wheel is a young adult wilderness program that was founded in 2001 and is a division of the Redcliff Ascent family. This therapeutic program is for adults, ages 18-25 with an average length stay of 6-8 weeks. Based on the Native American medicine wheel, this program is divided into six phases: the East: visionary, West: the warrior, North:leader, South: the healer, Sky: the creator and Earth: the protector. Within each phase participants will learn positive coping skills through physical, social, emotional and mental assignments by personal journaling, reading assignments and mastering wilderness survival skills.
A member of the National Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs, Medicine Wheel's Executive Director is Andrea Burgess, who has been with Medicine Wheel for 9 years and Redcliff Ascent for 12 years. Dr. Dan Sanderson is the Clinical DEirector and has been with the program since its founding in 2001 and Scott Schill is the Field Director and has been at Medicine Wheel since 1998.
With the belief that each participant is responsible for setting their own course in a positive direction, participants learn by doing with very stringent safety precautions set in place. With a staff to student ratio of 1-3, staff are certified in first aid, CPR and head instructors certified in Wilderness First Responders and all field staff are required to complete a one week training camp, a three week internship and completion of the same curriculum as the students.
