Lynn University’s Old Forge Center is a post-secondary residential program specifically designed for students with learning disabilities. The residential community is located on 30 acres that border the shores of Fourth Lake, which ‘provides an ideal backdrop for a healthy balance of academic experiences and social opportunities.’ Lakeside cottages and small dormitories and lodges comprise the 32 buildings. All students must live on campus, with two students live in each room, except where a single room has been requested. Four full time staff members reside on campus.
Academically, Old Forge Center provides study skills courses designed to enhance social and communication skills. Also offered are labs to develop basic math, writing and computer application skills. Participants actively apply the skills they learn in the classroom during their 12-15 hours of paid internships each week. These experiences are designed to help advance interpersonal skill development while working with supervisors, co-workers and customers. Learning continues within the residential community under the supervision of full-time residential staff.
During free time, students take advantage of the recreational and social activities found in the Adirondack Villages of Inlet and Old Forge, NY. Student Services coordinate various structured activities including soccer, mountain biking, shopping, movies, cross-country and downhill skiing, beach volleyball, hiking, exhibits at the Old Forge Arts Center, softball and concerts in the park on summer weekends.
