Living Well Transitions, a young adult independent living transitions program in Boulder, Colorado, has adopted one of the signature city parks in Boulder, and has received accolades for the volunteer service our staff and clients have provided. North Boulder Park, a 12.6-acre site at the base of the Rocky Mountain foothills, boasts a huge expanse of lawn, a baseball field, a large playground, a group shelter and many picnic tables, and serves as a prime gathering spot for fun-seeking Boulderites. During snowy months, the North Boulder Park is home to the only Nordic ski track in city limits.

In June of 2010, Living Well Transitions officially adopted North Boulder Park. Since that time, Living Well staff and clients have provided close to 100 hours of volunteer services to the park, provided by 24 unique individuals. Primary responsibilities include supporting Boulder Parks and Recreation Department in maintaining a clean and uplifted space by weeding beds, picking up trash, trimming around trees, and generally paying special attention to the needs of the park.

"It's so cool to be out here with our clients and really see them take more of an ownership role in their city," says Matt Wehrly, Life Skills Counselor and volunteer coordinator with Living Well Transitions. "In addition to helping maintain the park, we also have barbecues and picnics there. It really has become our place."

The good work of staff and clients has not gone unnoticed by the city, either. In a letter to Matt Wehrly, Mary Malley, the Coordinator for Volunteer Services with the Boulder Parks and Recreation Department, wrote, "We are so fortunate to have a group like yours that is dedicated to be stewards at the park. Thank you so much for your support."

It is not just the park patrons that reap the benefit of Living Well's volunteer efforts. Living Well Transitions clients participate in weekly volunteer groups at several sites in the greater Denver metro area. Other sites include Boulder Community Food Share, Project Cure, Growing Gardens Community Gardens, Boulder Shambhala Center, and other seasonal venues, as well. Through these volunteer experiences, clients get a real sense of how much they have to give, and how good it feels to offer support to their community.
