Living Well Transitions, an independent living program for young adults in Boulder, Colorado, has begun to implement the "Path of Freedom" training into its program curriculum. Developed by Sensei Fleet Maull initially for use with incarcerated and at-risk youth, The Path of Freedom is a training curriculum that teaches mindfulness-awareness meditation, non-violent communication, conflict resolution, and leadership skills.

"This training is both very adaptable and extremely precise," reported Britton Turkett, MA, Living Well's Program Director. "We were very fortunate to be able to train our entire staff before bringing this work to our clients. To create a normative culture - a place where the clients and staff are working with the same language and sets of practices - it was very important for all our staff to go through this. With all of us on the same page, as we bring this work to our clients, there is a real integration and consistency of language, culture and skill sets that we are all working with - clients and staff." Shortly after a two day workshop with Fleet Maull attended by all Living Well Transitions staff, Britton Turkett and Jetha Marek, MSW, a Living Well Transitions Life Skills Counselor, launched a ten week training course for a select group of clients.

"Our vision here is to bring this work to our clients and see who emerges from the first group as peer leaders," says Jetha. "These clients will then be in a position to co-facilitate groups for the next round of clients to go through the curriculum. So many of the skills taught in this training are geared directly at addressing the challenges our clients face every day. Though it was originally designed for people in prison, many of the young adults we work with are imprisoned by self-limiting beliefs and outmoded coping strategies. This works just as well with that kind of prison."

Living Well Transitions is an independent-living therapeutic program serving young adults challenged to meet the demands of responsible independent living. We provide individual and family therapy in conjunction with life-skills counseling and educational/vocational support for our clients, helping them develop a balance in life between opportunity and responsibility.
